Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 – Review

Now, this is a movie I was really looking forward to. The first movie three years ago was absolutely hilarious. When the amazing team from IMAX Kenya and ANGA Sky cinemas invited me for the exclusive premiere, how could I say no? I had to watch the Marvel superhero reunion in 3D as soon as possible.

Key things remained same in this sequel. Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his Walkman are still inseprable; Gamora (Zoe Saldana) has Quill in the dreadful friendzone and ignores his every flirtatious attempt; Drax (Dave Bautista) is a funny dumb pound of muscle; and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) manages to get on each end every ones nerves. There is also adorable cuteness that is Baby Groot. They really did a good job with this one. Baby Groot adds such a large emotional appeal to the film. I said ‘aww’ over 100 times throughout the movie because of him.

The cuteness overload that is Baby Groot *hears aww in background*

The movie starts off with the team protecting some super fancy batteries that Ayesha, the leader of a gold-skinned group known as the Sovereigns has. They do this all to get Gamora’s sister, Nebula, in exchange. Rocket’s itchy hands obviously steal the batteries and the following wild goose chase leads to Quill meeting his father, Ego when they land on another planet. He clearly outlines his origins and provides Quill with some ‘daddy issues’ resolve as he does this. Ego plays the role of Living Planet/Father of Star-Lord quite well.

Ego – Quill’s father

As Quill and his father catch up on lost time, the golden queen seeks assistance from Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his team to reclaim her priceless batteries. The plot gets better from here as Yondu faces being overthrown in leadership, Gamora and her sister’s sibling rivalry intensifies and Quill finds out the true reason for his father seeking him out.

The movie still maintains humor as expected. The music soundtrack is also quite amazing if you are into The Beatles, old school rock music and hints of soul. (I am an oldie within so I am already getting the soundtrack!) The movie has various twists towards the end and great character development. Did I mention the visual effects? EPIC! I will not get into too much detail because you just need to watch the movie yourself!

Don’t miss out on the epic movie. You can watch Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2 at IMAX here; and ANGA Sky here.
